WCB Alberta Return to Work Programs – A Win-Win Approach
It has long been accepted that the sooner a worker can safely get back to work following an injury or illness the more likely they are to have a positive outcome. Even though they may not be completely recovered, just returning to the workplace, in some capacity, can be beneficial to their overall convalescence. The longer an injured or ill worker is away from their work environment, the more protracted and costly their recovery can be.
While serious injuries and illnesses may understandably result in longer absences from work, the reality is that the majority of work related accidents are minor, requiring little or no time loss. By offering modified work programs that can be tailored to address the unique needs a worker may face, employers can mitigate claims costs by reducing or eliminating time loss from work while facilitating a safe and successful return to full duties.
As a way to assist employers in this regard, the WCB (Workers’ Compensation Board) Alberta developed a Return to Work (RTW) Services program that provides several benefits for both injured workers and employers. Here’s how it works:
For Injured Workers:
- Early and Safe Return to Work: The WCB Alberta return to work and modified duties programs help injured workers return to work as soon as it is safe, which can improve their physical and emotional well being.
- Modified Duties: If a worker can’t immediately return to their date of accident position, the WCB Alberta modified work program facilitates modified duties, alternative work and/or graduated hours within their medically defined restrictions. This ensures the worker remains engaged and productive while recovering.
- Income Continuity: If a worker is not able to work full hours or the modified work is at a lower salary, they will receive partial or top up wage loss benefits while they are recovering, which helps to minimize the financial impact of their injury.
- Rehabilitation Support: The WCB Alberta return to work programs take into consideration the ‘whole person’ impact of a work related incident and offers various rehabilitation services, including physical therapy, vocational rehabilitation, and psychological support, tailored to help workers regain their full capacity.
- Focus on Recovery: The structured approach allows workers to focus on their recovery without worrying about job security, as the program works in tandem with their employer and ensures they have a position to return to.
For Employers:
- Reduced Costs: By facilitating a quicker return to work, employers can reduce the costs associated with lost productivity, long-term disability claims, and hiring temporary replacements.
- Retention of Skilled Workers: The program helps retain skilled and experienced workers by enabling them to return to work, even if initially on modified duties. This reduces the need for training new employees.
- Improved Workplace Morale: Supporting injured workers in their return to work can boost overall employee morale and foster a supportive workplace culture.
- Compliance with Legislation: Participating in the WCB Alberta Return to Work program helps employers comply with occupational health and safety regulations, reducing the risk of penalties or legal issues.
- Customized Return to Work Plans: Employers receive guidance on creating customized return-to-work plans that suit the needs of both the worker and the organization, ensuring a smooth transition back to work.
Overall, the WCB Alberta Return to Work program aims to balance the needs of both injured workers and employers, promoting recovery and minimizing the disruption caused by workplace injuries. It further demonstrates to all employees that they are valued and supported in good times and bad. The belief that management cares can foster a positive working environment that, in turn, results in improved morale, increased employee retention, higher productivity and fewer accidents.
